What is Periodontitis?

Periodontitis and gingivitis are the most common diseases of the gums. Gingivitis is the cause of bleeding of the gums and the main cause of periodontitis. Symptoms are a reddish, swollen gum that bleeds easily. If the inflammation progresses it develops in periodontitis. The disease is worldwide the main cause of tooth loss. Periodontitis affects the tissues that support the teeth, including the bone. Usually the diseases are not accompanied by any pain or discomfort. In addition, some factors and diseases contribute to the progression of periodontitis:

  • Smoking
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Stress
  • Diabetes
  • Systemic diseases/conditions
  • Pregnancy
  • Medications

Without treatment, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss. The infection progress and destroy the deepest tissues producing the so called periodontal pockets. Now plaque can easily enter the pockets and destroy the surrounding tissues of the teeth.
However, the main problem is that the disease progresses without pain. That is the reason why the infection is mostly detected in a late stage. If the infection has reached the bone, it destroys the bone structure and the dentist might extract the teeth. In many cases the teeth itself are healthy.
However, there are other very important reasons for the treatment of periodontitis. The infection can affect the organism and contribute to the progression of other systemic diseases. Recent studies have shown associations of periodontitis with the following diseases:

  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Stroke
  • Pre-term birth
  • Rheumatism

Thus, it is important to get an oral examination as soon as possible. If you notice some symptoms of gum disease, you should not hesitate in making an appointment in our dental office.
